Tattooing has evolved significantly from what it once was. Fiji is considered the birthplace of recorded tattoo practices, particularly the ancient tattooing ritual known as vei qia. This ritual was closely linked to puberty and coming-of-age. Young women underwent tattooing using a tattooing stick and shark’s tooth dipped in charcoal and oil, which gave the tattoos their deep black color.

Today, tattoos have become a global phenomenon, with body art extending beyond cultural traditions to personal expressions of identity, sentimental memories, and life experiences. In the 21st century, tattoos are on full display, showcasing fascinating designs from various tribes, cultures, and historical influences. These permanent body markings serve as significant symbols, making each tattoo a special and unforgettable part of a person’s journey.

Many historians studying the Lapita culture have gathered illustrations, pottery, poetry, and tattooing tools over the years, with discoveries scattered across Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Micronesia. According to Samoan oral traditions, two women from the ocean, after witnessing vei qia in Fiji, introduced tattooing to Samoa. Evidence suggests that tattooing practices existed in Fiji as early as the 16th century.

However, tattooing grew rapidly in popularity leading into the 21st century, bringing significant influences from Polynesian and Fijian tribal tattoos. The fusion of traditional styles with modern artistry has created endless design possibilities. The history of tattoo art reflects human creativity across generations, and today, talented artists continue to turn ideas into reality.
